Drug Addiction
Read p. 383 – 385 in blue text 1. take notes on this section 2. answer the following: a. What are the differences between drug dependency, drug addiction and drug tolerance? b. Is alcohol a stimulant or a depressant? What are the stages of alcoholism? What can be done to help alcoholics? Warning sign of problem drinkers: 1. Increased Desire: Urge to drink more often and/or centering a day’s or week’s activity around a drink. 2. Increased Tolerance: Need to drink more alcohol to reach the desired “high” 3. Extreme Mood Changes: Acting in ways uncharacteristic with past behavioural patterns. 4. Black Outs: Total lapses of memory or only partial recall of behavior while drinking. 5. Morning Drinking: Picking up a drink to start the day or ease a hangover. (Not just in the morning, but at any appropriate time.) Distinguish between dependence, tolerance, and addiction. *** There is also an addiction worksheet to be completed.
